Dear members,
Last night we held our Annual General Meeting. For those who were unable to attend, we are pleased to announce the following CUPE Local 8911 members were elected by acclamation to the following positions:
- Sheldon Miller, Vice-President (2 year term)
- Caroline Cyr, Secretary-Treasurer (2 year term)
- Carrie James, Recording Secretary (1 year term)
- Matthew Bordewick, Trustee (3 year term)
We want to thank Akash Gill for her service as Recording Secretary. Akash has been critical in our advocacy, most notably our seconds count campaign which saw over 11,000 signatures, billboards, and thousands of views on social media, and helped communicate who we are, what we do, and why it matters to the government, stakeholders, and the public.
At last night’s meeting, after much discussion and debate it was decided by a vote that commenting will be disabled in the CUPE 8911 Facebook group until the next General Membership Meeting. Recent debate within that group has compounded the stress and anxiety our members face because of the staffing crisis at work. While as a Union we value the opportunity created by this Facebook group to encourage discussion and connection, we do not have the capacity to monitor the group 24 hours a day to ensure a safe and respectful space for members to speak. The executive will be reporting on possible ways forward to address the Facebook group at the next General Membership Meeting.
We are working on drafting a more detailed membership bulletin which we expect will be sent out in the next couple of weeks about what was reported on at the General Membership Meeting last night. The best way to reach us is by emailing executive@ecpbc.ca with any questions or concerns that you may have while we work on reporting on possible ways to move forward to address the Facebook group at the next general membership meeting.
In solidarity,
Donald Grant
President
